I arrived early and notified Jane Gerrish I would be recording the meeting via webcam. This was a test of the video, audio quality and proof of “Web Cam” concept more than anything. I didn’t realize this was the Department Head meeting and it would run longer than usual and apologize for not being able to stay and record the entire meeting. I was able to record the regular Selectmen meeting which encompasses the first 30 minutes and revolved around a request by the school to utilize a town space inside the school. The next forty five minutes encompass the Selectmen instructing Department Heads to begin budget preparation and Department Heads providing updates to the Selectmen.

He explained a company could provide streaming video over the internet of the live meeting with an archival of the meetings equal to 600 hours. The meetings would be available to view on demand and for download to residents as well. An estimate was provided of $175-200 per month which included all the equipment, set-up and maintenance.  The preliminary cost estimates are $2,100-2400. per year and provide residents full access to the meetings via the internet.

I think this method is an effective means to allow residents the ability to better understand issues facing the town, be better informed and provide a record of the meetings and voting. Many residents cannot attend meetings due to family and work commitments. This service for little cost and effort would provide open access to the meetings to people who cannot otherwise attend.

The system would provide a public record of the meetings which today we do not have. In other towns it is commonplace at Selectmen or even Adjustment meetings to have a tape recorder to transcribe minutes and provide record. This service could provide that resource as well.
