They will be serving free hamburgers and hot dogs, giving tours of the rescue trucks, a bouncy house (weather permitting) and lots of great handouts for the kids. Kids can also stop in and register for a raffle for two brand new bicycles donated by the Lebanon Rescue Corporation. Stop in and meet your local rescue workers, take a tour and have a free lunch! Boys in sixth grade and up interested in joining Lebanon Boy Scout Troop 369 may also sign up at this time. Watch for additional sign-up times and locations or sign-up at the first Cub Scout pack meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 6-7 p.m., in the gymnasium at the Hanson School. Leaders work to accommodate boys participating in sports and other activities.

Although this represents a tax rate increase of $.13 per thousand dollars of valuation (i.e., a property assessed at $100,000.00 would see an increased payment of $13.00), they felt the small increase, while necessary, will be welcome news to citizens. The school budget increase of $400,000.00 this year was the largest factor they had to consider when setting the new tax rate.

One of our major fundraising projects is the upcoming Shaker Hill Apple Festival on September 24 and 25, 2011.

We are contacting all the town and city clerks in southern Maine to ask you a favor. If there is any way that you could please print a copy of the attached flier about our upcoming major fundraiser (Shaker Hill Apple Festival on Sept. 24 and 25, 2011) and please post it in the area where community notices are visible in your town or city office, we would be extremely grateful.

Due to the increased demands of our services and our lack of funds for advertising, we are reaching out to the towns that we serve, and asking them to kindly help us spread the word about this upcoming fundraising event.

If any of your staff or residents would be interested in donating items for our yard and book sales, or antiques and collectibles or gift certificates to area businesses for our silent auction, or even consider volunteering at the Shaker Hill Apple Festival, please have them contact:

We are holding a juried craft fair at the Shaker Hill Apple Festival and would encourage quality basketmakers, potters, fiber artists, spinners, weavers, blacksmiths, woodworkers, painters, photographers, woodcarvers, stone artists, quilters, glass artists, and other nature-related artisans to apply.

Lastly, we are also looking for the use of a very large tent (such as would be used at a wedding or corporate event) for our gigantic yard sale.

Congrats to Rescue and the volunteers!

The Dorcas Society is planning its annual Fall Fest for Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Old Town Hall on Center Road. The event includes a craft fair, bake sale and a luncheon of homemade soups and chowders with apple crisp for dessert.

You may rent Table space for $10 per table by contacting Linda Rose at 676-9063. Sponsors are also sought for the annual community calendar that includes pictures and drawings from Lebanon students. Proceeds from the sale of the calendar benefit scholarship programs and community projects.

History of Docras
The Lebanon Dorcas Society was organized on May 9, 1837 under the name “Women’s Missionary Society of Center Lebanon, ME”. It was reorganized May 11, 1875 as the Ladies Sewing Circle. The sewing included making garments for missionaries and for the soldiers in the Civil War. The group’s name waslater changed to the Ladies Mission Circle. In 1942 we became known as “Ladies Aid of the Lebanon Congregational Church, then the Ladies Aid of the Parish of the Congregational Church and even the Center Lebanon Womens Group” at which time we became a secular organization. In 1976 we once again changed our name to “The Dorcas Society of Lebanon, ME”. The Dorcas Society has not been church affiliated for many years, but Dorcas of the Bible (was “full of good works and acts of charity” Acts 9:36) is still our inspiration as we try to serve the community in ways that are relevant today.

Who are We?
The “Dorcs” as we call ourselves informally, are an interesting group of women. Our bylaws authorize up to 16 members who
are residents of Lebanon or who have strong ties to Lebanon. Our current members are teachers,retirees, stay at home Moms,
bankers, business professionals,as well as Government workers.We all enjoy doing things for others, working together,
and admittedly “eating”. We are all good cooks. Bake sales on voting day and at our annual Fall Festival is always successful.
Sharing recipes when we meet at each member’s home is fun too.

OUR GOAL is to raise money to give away! We never want a balance in our treasury.
