Tuesday’s 4:30 – 6:00 pm – Craft Night with the Rec. Department at the old Town Hall. This is a free event for children.
Saturday 8/22/09 8:00 am – 1:00 pm – Book Sale !
Meet the new librarian, Jenn Griffin and the new Rec Director, Jessica Brewington. Place suggestions for new books in the library, find out what we have to offer as well as what we are hoping to offer in the future !
They are currently trying to set up a clothing pantry (free of charge) in Town. They are hoping to have it open either once or twice a month with an on call basis as well for emergencies. We are still in the process of trying to find a permanent home for this venture.
I am all for the clothing pantry, but across the street from the library is a food pantry who advertised for months and they have had no takers, but lots of food from what I hear. Maybe they could do the clothes too? I don’t think our rec dept or library workers should focus outside of their jobs too much, focus on the programs that have worked in the past. Maybe the church has room with the food pantry for the clothes and then you could have one stop shopping!
Just my two cents worth
What exactly are the new library hours? The hours listed above are different than the hours posted in todays Fosters. Karen Gerrish says the new hours are 4:30-8:30 Monday thru Wednesday. Confusing.
The hours and information above were provided by Jenn Griffin the new librarian. …
Curious makes a good point…in general where possible clothing and food pantries should integrate their efforts to maximize resources. Regarding focus of time though, if people want to volunteer time to help those in need, I think it’s wonderful. We need more people like this who look out for those who can’t do it themselves.
I would be suprised if it was “volunteering”, I believe the librarian gets a modest pay per hour. I was there a few weeks ago because I had never been to our “library”. It is sad that with the amount we give the library each year, that we have as little as we do. It is embarassing for anyone outside the town to look at this place.
I like the idea of the food and clothing pantry being together.
I was also confused when I read the Sanford news and then this. I hope the hours printed here are correct.
The library is not in a building that is operated year round. Due to the limited hours, it was explained at last years Budget Committee that there is much in the way of State assistance and grants we miss out on. We also are limited on what book sharing opportunities are available to us do to this.
There was discussion late spring about moving thre library to Hanson Elementary in cooperation with the School Department, making it year-round, expanded hours etc. I think that was all nixed without specific reason.
I agree by outside standards are library is lacking in space and services, but it does provide a great service to our children in summer. If we as a community want more, there should be dialogue on what “more” is and a plan formulated to get there.
The librarian and recreation director do get a small stipend for those duties but otherwise the clothing piece is all volunteer. One could argue the positions themselves are volunteer for the hours required versus the money earned. It truly is a labor of love and betterment of our young people and community.
