Big red said it in 3 words!
HOW CAN THEY!
If the town has been doing it for all this time, how can they decide ( without a vote) to discontinue a road for maintenance or town support /and still ask for town taxes?
I don't know of this road , etc. ,but if someone pays taxes to the town , then I think their road should be maintained !
This seems like another attempt from the town to do as little as possible and get as much as possible!!!!
"Raise your swords and don't give in"!!!

I have found it astounding for years that people live on private roads and get no road help.

I can understand the law that states the town is not responsible for maintaining them but those people pay taxes too.

Some roads have over 30 homes on them. You are probably looking at $100,000 in taxes from those people and I believed I have low balled that figure.

I don't see why the town can't atleast give them gravel. Not spread it but just give it to them.

Many roads in town are private and thus the law does not have to have the town maintaining them. They don't plow them, didn't even make one of them safe during the flooding.. School buses don't go on many of them. Thank God they do get rescue and fire coverage. Even Lebanon Rescue dreads going up some of those roads but they always respond.

I do think they should be able to get gravel at the very least. Even if the people on the road have to get a truck to carry the gravel. That would bring the cost down for the town.

I know people say, it was ones choice to live on the private roads. Many times, it's ones budget that makes them live on those roads.

Food for thought !!

maybe the people spoke but was it recorded and where does the closure start ?? i think this is what the residents are asking . you can't take our selectmens word for it so maybe the residents could hire someone to research where it starts and stops . some of the other 50 private roads are plowed and sanded as well as businesses and driveways on our dime so don't be fooled ! take a ride during a snowstorm and you can see it for yourself !!

It is my understanding that this happened in the 30's and the Town voted on it to discontinue the road. I don't think the selectmen can legally change what the town voted on. If so, start doing the other 50 private roads. While your at it, plow and sand my driveway! I will hold our selectmen accountable and encourage every private or discontinued road resident to sue to get their road done if the selectmen take away the will of the people as voted in the 30's. I cannot see where the selectmen took any vote this year on this?

Take a look who owns most of the property on bog road. That might give you a clue as to why they want to do this. EYES WIDE OPEN

I don't think anyone is asking the Town to break the Law regarding this issue. According to the Lebanon Maps, I see the upper half of Bog Road says 'discontinued in 1938'. The point of closure is very clear to me. I believe this situation is different than many of the other discontinued roads in town, where those roads were closed entirely. The upper half of Bog Road can never be re-opened. The Bog Road is definitely a Town Road up to a certain point, then it becomes discontinued. No one seems to know exactly where that stopping point is, more research must be done on this. It does sound like a court issue unfortunatly, which will end up costing the Town a lot in legal fees. That's very unfortunate, when it's only two tenths of a mile that is in dispute.

was the road ever recorded as closed or discontinued ? where is the actual point of closure ? sounds like everyone has different information on this ? what was the rush to resolve this ? why not research this matter more ? looking at other maps show roads closed or discontinued but were paved just a few years ago . sounds like a court issue , unfortunately.

How can they? I have family on a private or discontinued road, they spoke to an attorney and said the town would break the law by doing anything to it. My family got over it and do it. How can you encourage the town to break the law? Are you going to start doing the 50 other private/discontinued roads? Better be ready to pay up, we will want our done too.

The fact is, the law clearly states, it is against the law to expend public money on it.
